I am using specs for Aluminium 2024, obtained from the US DoD Mil handbooks.

My question is, whose standard does 2024 come from?

i.e. what body owns the numbering system / specification that 2024 refers to. Is it the US government? If not who?

"A system of four-digit numerical designations for wrought aluminum and wrought aluminum alloys was adopted by the Aluminum Association in 1954. This system is used by the commercial producers and is similar to the one used by the SAE; the difference being the addition of two prefix letters."

I think many other standards for-profit organizations have thier own version as well (derived from the original). SAE, AMS, ASME, ASTM. When you designate your specification, look to see which standards group is normaly spec'd in your industry.
