Hi everybody;
I need to install a bulkhead at the bottom of a water tank; since bulkheads have a psi rating please help with the following; I have a water tank 4 feet in diameter and 10 feet high; approximate capacity is 1000 gallons; bulkhead would be mounted at the very bottom of the tank; how can i determine the psi bearing down on this bulkhead? Thanks for your help.

If I read your question correctly, the pressure would simply be the unit weight of water times the depth of the water. At 1000 gallons and 4' diameter, I figure the depth to be 10.63', which is taller than your tank, so I'll use the 10' you gave. This puts the pressure at 624 psf or 4.3 psi. If there is any internal pressure in the tank, you would simply add it to this pressure.

Could you put your answer above in a Formula format ?

Thanks

Change in pressure(p) = Specific Weight of the fluid(w) * Change in elevation(h)

p = w * h

The change in elevation is the distance from the surface of the water to the bottom of the tank (10ft)

The specific weight of water is 62.4 lb/ft^3.

p=10ft * 62.4 lb/ft^3
p=624 lb/ft^2
624 lb/ft^2 * 1 lb/in^2 / 144 lb/ft^2 = 4.3 lb/in^2 (4.3psi)
