Line weights & Thicknesses in Engineering Drawings | |||

Hi All, I need clarification on different line thicknesses and weights used to identify different line types in engineering drawings. Is it necessary that a hidden has to be thinner (0.18mm) than a visible line(0.35mm) or can both be of the same thickness/weight?

hi,
It is neccessary to maintain difference in line weights it show clarity in ur drawings click LWT and in ur print outs in it will differentiate. |

According to MIL-T-31000, Global Engineering Documents; "All lines shall be opaque and of uniform width for each type of line" and "All line work shall be of reproduction quality." The attached picture shows that the lines are contrasting...

Thanks guys! I am refering this Australian drawing standard AS1100 which has shown 2 different line thicknesses/weights for hidden lines (0.18mm & 0.35mm). It has cited an example of a mechanical engineering drawing where it is using a dashed line with 0.18mm thickness for a hidden line. On the other hand it says that for internal threads we should use hidden lines with 0.35mm thickness.And further it says that only one thickness of hidden should be used. This has got me totally confused.
My problem now is that our client wants us to comply with this standard and I have already done almost 30 drawings assuming the same line thickness of 0.35mm for both hidden and visible line though i have been using different line weights/thicknesses for centerlines and dimensions (0.18mm). Please advise me what to do? Do u think I would be able to justify my stand of using a hidden line with a thickness of 0.35mm. |

The first thought I have is; What software, if any are you using?. Most CAD software will allow you to create a configuration and apply it to the drawing views quickly. If this is true with your CAD software, then changing over is just matter of opening the engineering drawing and changing the configuration. |

Thanks Kelly. We are using AutoCAD.I understand changing the line thicknesses wont be much of a hassle. But after reading what I had written do you think I would be able to explain my stand as in why I used the same line thickness. |

Well, these issues are allways different - depending on who you customer is. Ultimately, the issue is reproducibility and read-abilty of the document. Engineering drawing standards are created for consistancy and some orgaizations don't bend. As always - pick your battles wisely. |
