I have a hopefully simple question.

I want to place a 24foot I beam above the roof of my pole barn workshop in order to pull engines, lift things etc. I have a trolley system and crane already purchased. The max load of the crane is 1300lbs

My question is this: What size Ibeam will I need to support itself over a 24foot span, and hold 1300lbs at any point?

I have been given conflicting answers, mainly due to some saying I can help support the beam from overhead (trusses). Some also say that is dangerous because you transfer the load directly to your trusses, your not helping the beam, you are replacing it.

Any help would be appreciated.
