I need assistance in selecting steel support beams for a new garage with apartment above. Is there a table anywhere that lists I-beams and their load carrying capacity per linear foot (for differing spans)? Alternatively perhaps someone could work out the deflection formula for one or more of the beams listed below. The maximum deflection should be less than 1/180. 1st floor (1) 17' span, 600# per linear foot 1st floor (2) 22' span, 575# plf 2nd floor (1) 17' span, 900# plf 2nd floor (2) 22' span, 180# plf Garage door headers 16' span, 1,350# plf

I think you should try and find a local structural engineer for this one. I could give you some beam sizes for these loads, but there is much more to it. The end connections and bracing must be adequately installed and that will require much more depth than can be provided here.

Thanks for the feedback. I have built several post and beam barns using red oak framing, but on this project a fairly massive (6" X 18"+) oak beam is needed to support the heavier loads, so I thought that steel might be a better choice. Dave.

Steel could very well be the better choice here. It may not be as pretty, but it is an efficient material for the type of loads and deflections you're looking for.

I designed some columns for our church a while back from Wide Flanged beams, then for looks, we covered them with plyable wood paneling. They looked really good. Perhaps this is an option for exposed steel support beams that will be exposed. Thanks, Scooter
