Wide Flange Beam - Uniformly Loaded | |||

I'm trying to learn how to calculate the maximum deflection of wide flange beams carrying uniform loads. The deflection formula is (5 X Weight X Span**3)/384 X E X I). Using a W8X10 for example is the modulus of elasticity E value 29,000,000 for carbon steel, and is the moment of inertia I value 30.8? Therefore, for a W*X10 beam over a 12' span carrying 240lb/ft, is this formula correct? (5 X 20 X 144 X 144 X 144) / (384 X 29,000,000 X 30.8)

Oops, my formula for the W8X10 beam had a typo. (5 X 2880 X 144 X 144 X 144) / (384 X 29,000,000 X 30.8) |

You had the loading right the first time: 240#/ft = 20#/in, not 2880. However, the equation you're using is incorrect. Go back to your book and compare it very carefully to what you have posted... |
