Brittle materials such as glass, silicon, ceramic
Why fracture? I don't know how to describe the cause of fracture. Can you provide some reference about the cause of fracture? I want to understand "fracture" from the viewpoint of material. Thank you! |

Glass, silicon type materials are classified as ceramics. There are 3 general material group. Metals, Ceramics, Polymers. Metals are not counted as brittle as material where as ceramics does.This is related with the atomic structure of the materials. Ceramic metarials which are constructed of elements-compounds mainly bound each other with covalent bonding. Metallic materials, in this case metal atoms bound each other with metallic bonding this is not stronger as covalent. To answer your question; metallic bonding gives ductile skills to material and covalent bonding makes it hard stronger but brittle. At that point you may ask then why glass breaks so easly. This is come from the defects (cracks/pores) on surface and interior of material. These defects related with manufacturing methods. In theory glass should be highly strong. |
