Can someone please tell be if there is a chart somewhere on the web that would tell me the strenght of 1/2, 3/4/ and 1" square stainless steel 304 tubing. |

Shear, torsion, compression, tension, bending, column loading, or all? Material strength? What are you trying to do? |

I am looking for bending first and then tension? |

Ok, get your material specifications then go: /mechanics_material_menu.shtml /calculators/section_square.htm /calculators.htm - bottom left are the bending calculators Modified by Kelly Bramble at Thu, Dec 21, 2006, 16:40:36 |

Is there a list somewhere that will tell me the strength of .50, .75, and 1.0 stainless steel tubing with a .065 wall thickness. For example how many lb/in the tubing will with stand before reaching the yeild strenght or elastic limit? |

a50jeep, I have an extensive library of engineering books and I have never seen a simple chart for maximum bending loads for structural shapes anywhere. Structural engineering is not that simple... There are an infinite number of loading possibilities and configurations. In engineering, we normally sketch a free-body diagram of our application. Then, with the calculated (mostly estimated) loads applied to a structural member we back-calculate our structural member characteristics. Regardless of what we calculate the final design will be several to many times stronger than required. It is easier to over design than to design "just right". If you want to create a reference chart for yourself you would do the following: 1. Determine the material properties of the particular stainless steel (yield, young's modulus...) 2. Get a size and dimension chart on standard structural square tubing which you are interested in. 3. Calculate the section properties (moment of inertia) for each cross section size. 4. Select a particular bending application, such as a single load applied some distance from a rigidly mounted location. 5. Solve (calculate) for the maximum load that can be applied to obtain yield for each section using the appropriate equations. Now, you could set your calculations up in a spreadsheet. All you would have to do is just change you section properties for each different size shape.

Kelley, Thank you very much for the help. I will have to work the problem like they taught in college. I broke out my strenght of materials text last night. I was just hoping that there was chart somewhere that all I had to do was enter the numbers. Thanks again,
