I an new to this forum and not an engineer, but I thought you folks may be able to steer me in the right direction. I am building a deck on the (extended from) the second floor of a house. I am going to extend the joists by attaching similar (2x10) joists from the floor. The deck is only going to extend 4 feet out from the house. How do I calculate whether the load on this cantilevered deck will be held by the wood I'm using? Do I need to double up the joists? How far in do I need to attach the joists to provide proper support? Thanks

I am not sure where to look, but I think there are standard drawings already out there that show how to do this very thing. I'd search for books or data on framing residential dwellings.
Then, you just have to follow the drawings example. This would be an example of thousands of appartment porch application. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
