I hope someone here can help me.
I am about to sister (2) 3/8" thick x 10" tall x 16' long steel plates to (3)2x10's. What would be a good screw pattern to attach the steel my main beam (the 3 - 2x10's)? staggered or columns? I was not planning on screwing all the way through to the other side..or should I ? |

I'm just guessing here, but it sounds like you are trying to do something my brother-in-law tried - getting rid of a bothersome column in your basement. Right? Just make the existing beam stiffer, right? My advice as a registered professional mechanical engineer who knows a little about stress analysis and deflection? Don't even attempt it unless you (1)-have a structural engineer examine the situation, (2)-are willing to live with the unavoidable dip in the floor above, and (3)-are willing to absorb the probable expense of repairing the damage, either now or when you try to sell the house.

How about a picture of your application, I'm having problems seeing your description in my minds eye. |

basically, sandwiching (3) 2"x10" with a 3/8"x10" on each side for a distance of 16 feet. what should my screwing pattern look like? staggered (W - shape) or column (I - shape) & how about the spacing between the screws??
Application= in my basement to support a span of 14' without the need for a floor jack (loly column) in the middle.. |
