Hey Friends, I am trying to design Hovercraft and the lift system in hovercraft uses two Honda Gx- 120 engine. These engines are arranged adjacent to each other to give overall 2000 rpm through V-chain connected with shaft of engine. These engines need to be started together and I need both the engine to rotate in one dir (clock wise or anti clokwise). Is there someway I can resolve the problem of running two engine in one dir ???
Starting System - Recoil or electric start

The challenge you have is torque. Helicopters have a tail rotor for direction control and anti-torque. Some helicopters use counter rotating rotors to compensate for the torque. You will need add counter torque some how. Change the direction of one of the aifoils or include a anti-torque rotor. Modified by Kelly Bramble at Sun, Apr 01, 2007, 21:06:45 |

I absolutely agree with Kelly. One current way to counter this torque is to vector off a nozzel jet in an adjusted direction and/or size from the main presure chamber. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Thanks Kelly and Randy, But you got the picture entirely wrong - Hovercraft not Helicopter, it might be my discription. However, Torque = radius * Force or Torque = Power/ ang. speed. Do you really think Torque is the factor causing Honda- Gx-120, to start clockwise or anticlockwise. |

I get what you mean - two identical motors will both run in the same direction. The obvious (and obviously impossible) solution is to tip one upside down. Some motors can run in reverse direction, but to the best of my knowledge there are a couple of things - timing chain tensioning, cam lobe machining that prevent this. I don't know what a v-chain is? Maybe the 'obviously impossible' is not so impossible. Assuming you're driving fans, you could top-mount one, if you have space to do so.

If you have a spinning mass, yes torque is a design issue. The engine, hover blade or fan - what ever... Go out to your car and rev the engine. Notice which way the car tilts (right) during reving and high rpm. If you did not have wheels on the ground the car would spin. I'm sure you do NOT need to change the rotation of the engine, however changing the rotation on one of the hover fans or propellers would go a long way in minimizing the torque effect and allowing flight without spinning the whole craft. - Basic physics... I understood hoover craft well. A vectored nozzel is a good way to handle anti-torque as well as directional vectoring, am I right? This concept could also be used to improve on the problem hoover craft have stopping and over running in a sweep (turn). Vectored Nozzle ...how will that fix the problem of making Two Adjacent Engine Running Together in the same direction ...
just that instead of belt it is chain and the bottom two gears are connected with engine.
