I am trying to design the SUPPPORT LEGS FOR Preesure Vessel. The best way of using the pipe as a leg is to cut or notch out the pipe wall - removing half of the width of the pipe - and lay the pipe up the side of the vessel shell. But Does This means that the line of action of the weight from the vessel coincides with the centroid of the pipe leg and so there is no bending moment transmitted into the leg and baseplate ???? Bending moment of half round B = My/I , taking I/y =section modulus=z
THanks and Regards

If I understand your setup correctly, then the bending load on the legs from the weight of the tank would be minimal. But the schoolbooks don't teach you much about the real world, and that things are never perfect. The pad might not be exactly level; if it is outside you could have wind-loading; and never forget the ever-present forktrucks or other vehicles. All these events place a side load (bending) on the support legs. If 30 years has taught me anything, its that steel is cheap compared to the costs of failure! |

I'm not a pressure vessel expert, however I suspect there are explicit requirements and specifications to handle this within the ASME PVC. The safest solution I can think of that will not compromise the vessels strength is to design a support cradle. You can secure the pressure vessel using straps. |
