Hi, Any idea on the advantage of asymmetric leaf spring on vehicle?Does it provide better stability with installing the shorter length of asymmetric forward? |

Vicky, I am assuming you are referring to a leaf spring being used on a rear-wheel drive vehicle. To my knowledge, the reason the short section of the spring is installed forward of the rear axle is to reduce spring "wrap-up" under acceleration. This condition occurs as the pinion gear in the rear end housing tries to "climb" the ring gear, causing the rear end housing to rotate in the opposite direction of tire rotation. Several auto manufacturers have also alleviated this problem by using short, stiff leaf sections forward of the axle and having fewer, longer leaf sections rearward of the axle for a smooth ride. If you look at a trailer that utilizes leaf springs, you will see that they use springs with equal length sections forward and aft of the axle to more evenly distribute the load. I hope this helps. If you would like to learn more about the construction of leaf springs for performance use, I highly recommend reading the Mopar Performance Chassis Manual. It has lots of useful information that is pertinent to ANY rear wheel drive car that uses leaf springs. I hope this helps to answer some of your questions.
