In addition to Randy's comments, I would also add this. I wish that it was against the law to introduce ANYONE to 3D CAD until they have mastered the basics of 2D. Why? Because no matter how wonderful your ideas are and how many problems they solve, they eventually end up in the form of 2D drawings for someone to make the beast. If your 2D drawings are junk, your ideas will end up the same way. And then no one is happy. There are drafting skills that MUST be taught for an engineer to successfully communicate his ideas. And these skills cannot be taught in 3D model development.

As I understand it, AutoDesk has leaned off towards Inventor for its solid modeling.
I believe, ... while (it has been a while) AutoCAD will provide 3D images, the root software was written years before 3D was a plausable possibility. Unless I'm mistaken this is why AutoDesk went to the extreme efforts to develop Inventor. I did use AutoCAD to do 3D work for a few years, however, if I made a change in the "wireform" (how AutoCAD got there) the whole drawing portion of the project was wasted and had to be struggled through again. I'm pretty sure the basic root AutoCAD software unit was written before parametrics, while it does OK now deep down it just isn't change oriented. ... If you want to do 3D with an AutoDesk product use Inventor... a fine product! They tried to wrangle AutoCAD into a stronger 3D footprint with Mechanical Desktop but compared to Inventor, I found it a beast to learn.

Just as are several other current solid working CAD software applications out there, Inventor is intuitive and powerful as a solid modeling tool.

That being said, I must hand the award to AutoDesk's AutoCAD for being a major influence in birthing us all into the world of affordable CAD. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude.

The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them.
