First, I assume you mean that the hole intersects with datum A. In that case you cannot position a single hole to the datum, since there really is no distance from the hole's axis to datum A. But this idea of a single datum does work when positioning a pattern of holes -- because you are positioning the holes to each other, and then datum A would control perpendicularity. (Even back to your classic example of positioning a hole to datums A, B, and C, the "A" datum really only controlled perpendicularity.)
