: Greetings everyone,: I'm having a difficult time understaing the whole concept about composite position tolerance. Can someone please explain to me how to get the pattern-locating tolerance zone? I know how to calculate the feature-relating tolerance zone but I have no idea on how to calculate the pattern. Are there any specific formulas you can share with me?The bottom line of a composite true positionTolerance frame is the "floating" tolerance. It's the relationship of the pattern elementsonly to the pattern, and is most efficientlychecked with a fixed ("idiot") gage. It can be done with open setup, but the calculations areextremely difficult. Another method would be theuse of papergaging. This is not all that well-known, and to fully wring out a pattern can bemore than a little time-consuming. I have a GW-Basic program which will do it, but since I wrote it for my own use, the use of it may be abit non-intuitive for others. I would be glad to email a copy to anyone who asks. Who knows, it might actually solve your problem.Don LaugheryBaltimore, MD
