410 SS fastener to attach aluminum cause fastener failure? | |||

I have a client who wants to use 410 SS to attach an aluminum extrusion to painted carbon steel roof panel. I had read, somtime ago, of a situation where this combination leads to catastrophic failure of the fastener. I believe the root cause was classified as cell type corrosion failure or hydrogen assisted stress corrosion or both, but I have been unsuccessful at finding any reference to this type of problem to forward to my client. Check out the following link on EE /galvanic_capatability.htm. Compare the anodic index of all three materials relative to each other then compare to your operation environment.

There are tweo issues here, are the materials compatible from a galvanic corrosion standpoint and will SCC osccur on the fastener. In this case 410 stainless steel will be more noble than the materials it is attaching. The amount of area of the fastener is small compared to the material being fastened. It should be acceptable aas far a galvanic corrosion is concerned. This is similar to using Stainless steel rivets in Al skin material on aircraft wings. Relative to SCC, for SCC you need stress, environment and a material which is susceptable. In this case it would depend on the hardness of the screw, the the stress level in the screw. Generally the Al and Steel will corrode before the fastener with the 410 stainless acting cathodic. On the cathodic end the reaction usually involves the consumption of electrons forming hydrogen from hydrogen ions, depending on ph of solution, the hydrogen can then penetrate the steel. How it effects teh steel depends on the hardness of the screw. If the screw is Rc 25 or lower it should not be an issue. |
