I am not an engineer by trade, but I really need a software package that one can use to simulate a machine (pure mechanics). Cogs, wheels, ropes, chains, pullies, gravity, momentum, etc. Friction would be a bonus. Iddeally it should be able to show me a animation of the machine in motion and give me feedback on movement vectors. Hell, I would use The Incredible Machine (game) if it had the right parts... ;) Think about the word 'bicycle' if you need to know how complex the simulator should be. I would prefer it if the software was freeware and available for download somewhere on the internet. Does anybody know of a tool like this?

If there were an more affordable software or freeware like that I'd be using it to make my living. I design machines for a living. It takes a good current CAD program and several very expensive add-ons to do all those things. Also kick in a big system. Inventor, Solid Works and possibly others will allow you to constrain motion of gears, cranks, rods, slides, and such as working assemblies in animation. They also will help work with sheet metal bending and flat-outs. Expect to lay out about $5000 to start, then add on even larger sums to continue towards your goal to figure friction, centrifical force, momentum, gravity and vectors. If you find one, PLEASE let me know, I'd love to have it, too!!!.

I expected as much. Thanks for the reply though... I actually hoped I would not have to build a prototype. My machine is not complicated at all. But seeing as I am not a welder, fitter & turner, etc. all rolled into one, the quality of the whole thing is going to be adversely affected. Still... It should be sufficient to prove my point. Thanx again for the reply man.

One thing you may consider if you are going to do a prototype, make it out of HDPE, not real cheap, except the prototyping process becomes Soooooo easy. You can get HDPE from most any quality plastics supply house. It comes in most shapes and can be drilled, sawed, milled, lathed, and glued with the right glues. The strength will not be steel, but the proof of any action and shapes interacting will be there.

Now that sounds like an idea I must seriously consider. Thanx man!

I found something. I cannot vouch for the accuracy of the simulation, but Euler 6 is a software package that seems to be able to simulate a mechanism and give a lot of feedback. It's not free, but I'm impressed with it. I must admit however that it can get quite involved... You have to define a joints orientation as a vector in relation to the object it is attaced to, etc. Not exactly difficult, but not fun at all. I want to be sure about my idea anyway so I'm just gonna build a darn propotype... < Who knows, maybe you'll like it. Just search for: Euler Mech Simulator on the internet. I can't remember the site, but I think it was in the russian domain. There is a demo available for download. |
