Hey all, I am looking for some ME career/graduate study advice. I am a computer scientist by training and degree and after 5 years in the industry I am looking for a career shift. Engineering has always been my first love but I find the confines of a keyboard and screen limiting. I want to build things that people can use and benefit from outside the realm of their desk. I have always been interested in consumer product design, robotics and new materials, so I was considering returning to school for an advance degree in mechanical engineering. I was wondering if anyone had any advice or insight as to where such a path might lead me. I hope this isn't too vague Thanks for any information you can provide. |

I started my education as a computer programmer, while I was working in a machine shop making aircraft machine parts, later I found myself running aircraft machine part shops. I ran with that and went on to ME. Now, I'm working as a manufacturing engineer where I design machines that produce product, have them built part by part in machine shops, and have myself and my staff assemble and wire/program them. This means I get to use my computer science, my first love for things that work, my other first love which is creativity, my natural born talent to understand machines, my need to make things that improve safety, speed, and productivity to people's amazement, my love to meet and mix with other engineers, and my strong background in machine shop.
I'm not sure if this is what you are asking, but I think perhaps I'm a good example. All in all the key word is robotics, any machine today that is Micro Processor, PLC and User Interface driven with any kind of motion, be it pneumatic, electric, hydraulic, or (most frequently) all the above is actually robitics (to me). The choice to shift to my example is ME in machine design. -randy- The worst suggestion of you lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. Try looking around in the automation and controls industry. You may enjoy that with your education and experience. Good luck to you. |
