I have an aluminum plate (5052-H32) in an electronic enclosure used to conduct heat from some of the components to the wall of the chassis. The plate is interfaced to the components with a non conductive heat transfer material (fujipoly). Currently there are some steel (zinc plated) clinch (PEM) standoffs assembled to the plate. The unit is only used indoors and mainly in server rooms. The plate is not painted. My question is this, currently the aluminum plate has a yellow iridite finish, do I need it? I know that AL 5052-H32 has very good natural corrosion resistance but is there anything else I should be concerned with. Terry |

Yellow iridite (conversion coating) is a good preventitive corrosion coating for aluminum. I don't beleive you will have any problems with the zinc against the aluminum within a indoor application. I don't believe iridite is an expensive process so, I would suggest that you go ahead and do it to be sure. You might consider doing a class 3 iridite. Class 3 helps with electrical conductivity (if the chassis is electrically grounded). |
