Choked Plate Heat exchangers | |||

We have two Plate heat exchangers in our guascor engine one is for the intercooler circuit and the other for the jacket water circuit,the jacket water circuit is hotter then the other circuit and the heat exchanger on this circuit doesnot get choked whereas the other heat exchanger gets choked after 1-2 days of engine operation and we need to open it up and clean it again and again there is a single cooling tower for both the circuit ,water from the cooling tower first enters the intercooler HE and then the jacket water HE,all the choking takes place on the intercooler LT side we are using water treatment chemicals but they dont seem to make any effect even back flushing doesnot do any good.Can any body tell me why.Heat exchangers are ALFA Laval M10 MFM .

I think you have a design problem. There is too much temperature difference (delta T) between the hot engine water and the cooling tower water, and you are "burning on" minerals and stuff from the tower. If its an open tower they are extremely good at cleaning dirt and debris from the air and putting it in the water. A strainer is a great idea. But since the inter cooler section is first and not fouling and the second engine section is, there is a design problem.

We used the same type and brand heat exchangers-you didn't mention a Y strainer for your water IN-its a lot easier to clean a Y strainer than to disassemble the heat exchanger. You will also get a lot more cooling if you can take your heat exchangers out of series and put them in parallel. Maytag |
