TYP and REF.dimension definition on drawings | |||

Hello.
Could anybody explain me the mention of TYP. and REF. definitions of dimensions on drawings. Thanks. |

I believe Tunalover is correct saying that TYP is not recognized by ASME, however I do not see any major industry issues with using this on engineering drawings. Good design practice is to use to same size features on a part when practical. For example, to design in a radius of R.250 on part which may have ~ 250 or more radius features is a great idea. Using TYP to indicated that a radius of .250 is used all over the part could save considerable expense/time in counting the radius. Counting the radius's may actualy cause a problem at manufacturing or inspection in that should the count be wrong this could invoke a engineering change. Generaly, engineering change notices cost time and money.

We have a way of handling times when there are many inside radii held to one value: Add a note saying UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFED, INSIDE RADII SHALL BE .06. Likewise, if the same drawing has many outside radii held to the same value, then UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFED, RADII SHALL BE .06.

TYP is not recognized by the dimensiong and tolerancing standard ASME Y14.5M-1994 or the drafting standard ASME Y14.100 as a valid method for defining the number of places that a requirement (or dimension, or whatever) applies. To me it is old-dated, sloppy, and shows that the draftsman is too lazy to count the number of times the requirement (or dimension, or whatever) applies. REF is sometimes used to provide a "soft" callout that is for advice only. The use of REF should be minimized and no decisions should be based on it (it tends to be missed when changes are made to the "hard" callout). Another method of indicating reference information is to enclose it in parenthesis. |

TYP on drawings is generally defined as TYPICAL. This is often used when there are similar features, and to avoid unnecessary dimensioning by the draftsperson. REF on drawings is generally defined as REFERENCE. These dimensions are to be used as reference only. Hope this info helps. Take Care. |
