Does anyone know how sheet metal gauges were established? Does it have anything to do with weight per sq ft?

Thanks

The weight is mirrored down as gauge numbers. The gauge thickness of different materials is different.
You may check more on

You got it. The Manufacturers Standard Gage is currently based on the weight of 41.82 pounds per square foot per 1 inch thick.
