I'm a middle school student with the assignment to build a bridge out of uncooked posta and glue only. Creativity is encouraged. Measurements: 30 cm by 15-18 cm by 5 cm. It has to be able to hold 2.5 lbs. The five lightest bridges that can support the weight count towards a combined score for the whole class. The best I can come up with is manicotti for the support and lasagna for the road. Any suggestions from knowledgeable people? Thanks. Jean |

To keep it simple, I would use tubular(not solid round) pasta. The general ideal is that you want pasta with the largest cross section and the material (mass) of the pasta to be far from the actual center of the pasta piece. Real buildings and bridges use structural member shaped like an "I" or a rectangle, as well a "C". The "I" shape is used with the load applied to the top and bottom. Good luck! |

Right on,
Also, one more piece of advice, use triangles as often as you can. Traingles are excellent ways to prevent distortion. This adds up to strength. If you look at old bridges you see many triangles. -randy- The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Thank you Cragyon and Randy for your advice. The bridge supports way more than the required weight. It was fun building it. Now we'll see how it measures up against the others. The lightest one to support the weight wins. Thanks again for your help. |
