Determine thread length by pressure requirements. | |||

How would you go about calculating thread length based on an internal pressure of 100psi. i want to use a safety factor of about 4 so I need to design a thread length that will withstand around 400 psi or so. I have a 3" pipe that will be tapped at both ends and smaller inlets and outlets tapped into the caps for flow. What equation should i use. I know this is kind of elementary, but I cannot remember for the life of me which equation to use and how to go about it. All help is appreciated. thanks. just meassure the standar fiting to be used to tap the ends.
Look at your hardware shop for a female 3" cap , and made the thread a slight more lenght As your 100 psi is a NORMAL pressure for a mild steel pipe Schedule 40,you had solve it. |

, at the bottom, there are several pages which give the equations you need. I would use the "Minimum length of thread engagement formula and calculations per FED-STD-H28/2B" You will need to know the material characteristics.
