I know it's a silly question, but it's just out of my curiosity for this particular incident. What makes the car engine not stopping at the TDC while the engine shutdown, let say for a 4 cylinders engine with 90 degree crank angle apart? |

I think a reciprocating engine may stop at any cylinder TDC. I not aware of any reason why an engine can't... I think the cylinder position with respect to TDC at shutdown is just random. |

However, if one of the cylinders trys to stop at TDC while completing a compression stroke the piston of that cylinder will try to push away from TDC... unless it happens to stop perfectly at the very exact top of the stroke. More than likely if the rotational force has slowed down that much the piston would compress the air mixture and not reach TDC then back crank several degrees. Ever try to kick start a Harley? The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
