I am writing in regards to a pump application that is some what different from what my company has done in the past. We are a battery separator plant that uses a process oil similar to Shellflex 3681 (150 cSt at 40degC and 12.2 cSt at 100degC). As part of a bulk oil storage and processing project, we will have a 10,000 gallon tank that stores oil until it is ready for processing and distribution. The worst operating conditions are as follows:
1. The 10,000 gal. tank is a double wall tank to avoid making a secondary containment and therefore must be filled and emptied from the top. It is roughly 8ft diameter, 27ft long, and rests on its side. 2. It will be located out side of the building with all other equipment inside. 3. During the winter, the shut down lasts up to a week and will cause the oil to cool to ambient temperature which may get down around freezing at which point the oil viscosity is on the order of 5,000 centistokes 4. The system will be operating at 30 GPM with head losses due to piping on the order of 400 ft and standard pipe size after the pump is 1-1/2" SCH40. I am looking for a submersible pump, preferably positive displacement, that will fit/attach into the tank and meet the above requirements. Please let me know what ideas you might have. |

My thought is a gear pump, but not submersed. Instead of submersing the pump, place it lower than the bottom of the tank. Feed it with a large, short inlet right off the tank. I would be sure to provide a presure regulator ahead of most of the out-put plumbing to prevent reaching any bursting presure while at high viscosity levels. A large pump with some gear reduction on the motor comes to mind, as well. -good luck!- The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Why not to heat the oil on the pump zone ????? |
