I'm doing an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) project. Currently, I'm designing my AUV. The hull is basically a cylindrical stainless steel or aluminum. I want to calculate the maximum depth estimate my design can go. Or the other way around given the maximum depth, I want to know how thick my tube should be.

Can the calculator do that? /calculators/shell_internal_pres_pop.htm

I would think that it's dependent on the material of the tube but the calculator didn't ask for the type of material.

I actually found a program that can calculate it.

www.deepsea(DOT)com/downloads/updos301.exe

The calculator is asking for a maximum allowable stress (S). This is the number which compensates for your SF.

For example, if you use SAE 1018 steel, which is rated at approximately 32KSI. If you want a SF of 3:1 then you would use 32,000/3 = 10666.67 for S.

Please correlate your calculations.

Hi,
Thanks for the quick reply.
Can you elaborate what (SF) is? I'm new to pressure vessel engineering since my back ground is computer science/engineering.

Hi Everyone
I need some serious help in Pressure Vessel Calculations. I currently conducting some inspection works on some pressure vessel which have been in service for some years and i cant not get any data on the vessels, like material spec. efficiency etc. What i trying to find out is that, is there any give values in the ASME code for when the Material Spec. and Efficiency is not given. What do i do? Please bear with me i just got API 510 certified a few months ago. and ooooooooo yea if i can get a spreed sheet with calculations for API 510 & 570 works.

thanks
RAF

SF = Safety Factor, if a material is rated for a yield of 32ksi, it is not a good idea to design such that that stress will occur. So, your safety factor is, in the case of your AUV, piece of mind it will return to you.

The Variables in the Calculator are:
(P) = Design Pressure (internal) (psi)
(R) = Inside radius of shell under consideration (in.)
(S) = Maximum Allowable Stress value (psi)
(E) Joint Efficiency (80% = .80)

If I understand correctly,
(S) is the rated maximum allowable stress of the material divide by Safety factor.

What I'm not understanding is the calculator is not asking for the depth pressure I'm planning on putting the pressure vessel(AUV) in.

I would think that if I want it to go as deep as 1000 feet, compared to let say 50 feet, then I need a thicker shell.

The calculator seems to only taking into account the internal pressure and the rated stress of the material used?

hi sir, i'm new to this webpage. Actually i'm an engineering student doing practical in a palm oil company.I need to calculate the plate thickness for storage tank (SS 304). design temperature is 100°C. the storage tank specification are as below :
Height = 9.144 m
Diameter, d = 6.7945 m
Radius, r = 3.39725 m

Formula: V = πr2h
= π × 3.397252 × 9.144
= 331.543948 m3

please help me...

Do you still have that pressure vessel spreadsheet available?
I've just discovered your note, and could use some information on checking external pressure tube applications.
Thank you.

Yes, you are right, in fact on second inspection that calculator is not going to help you all. The calculator is for determining the required wall thickness of a pressure vessel subjected to an internal pressure. You are concerned about an external pressure.

Looking around Engineers Edge, I do not see any analysis pages that will help you.

Don't give up yet, there will be somebody along whom probably knows the equations you need.

I was wondering if I may receive that spreadsheet. I'm having a hard time finding anything useful in calculating crush pressure limits. Please let me know, thanks.
