A few of examples:
1.
You have a cutting tool for a die. It is made hardened tool steel. You need to sharpen it without softening the material. You will need to grind it... or in some cases you could wire EDM (but you don't have a wire EDM).

2.
You need a 16 RMS or better finish requirement on a part made from an alloy with plenty of nickle, (most any alloy for that matter).

3.
You need to hold a tolerance of ±.00005", (close tolerances) on most anything.

4.
You have a shaft that must be round and to size within ±.0002, (closely called out roundness).

5.
You have a surface that is not allowed to have any surface compression or cracks from conventional machining.

6.
You have a part that has been welded and the weld area is not hardened in inconsistant patterns, but the surface needs to be flat or round.

7.
You have to make parts that will fit absolutely flat together in a "metal to metal contact" and allow no fluid to pass between the union. An example would be automotive valve and seat faces, or reed valve bodies.
