We are using Roll Tap of M 1.6 X 0.35 at an RPM of 540, using Suhner tap attachment on 17-4 PH Material, with hardness of 24 RC. We are facing the problem of thread-jamming while inserting the screw using pnuematic gun , though the thread answers the thread gauge. We have observed a mini-teeth at the minor diameter of the thread Can you suggest the reason of this problem ? Do you suspect the hardness of the component an issue ? Thanks Manoj

1. Make sure the thread attachment is not running out of travel.
2. Have you tried a different brand of screw? 3. You may need to go to a larger GH size of tap. (As I remember, years ago we were making parts for Bell Helicopter with 1/4-28 threads in a stainless part. We had to go up a GH size to get a fit because of the hardness of the stainless and the tendency of it to cut a tight thread.) 4. You may have to expermint with the coolant you are using. [my bet - you will go up a few .00mm tap size to the next GH to correct the problem] > incase you don't know - down a GH size will allow you to make a threaded hole fit for a stud grip using standard threaded rods - up a GH size will allow a tight hole to be tapped slightly larger - look on the taps for the GH you are using. ... Then ask you tap supplier for assistance.... AND buy GOOD taps. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
