Back driving worm gears for use in governor. | |||

Hello I am about to cut a worm gear (wheel) for use in a mechanical governor gear train. I would like to know the best tooth form to use with respect to the trains ability to readily "back drive". Thank you Stewart |

Thread form is pretty irrelevant, but your lead angle will be critical in backdriving considerations. Depending on size of worm and gear, materials of each, and several other factors you will want at least a 2 start thread and most likely 3 or more starts if the unit is of mid to micro size. Since this is for a governor unit, I'm guessing that the backdriven worm will couple to the governor resistance. If so then the standard worm/worm gear friction formulas for your materials from machinerys handbook will tell you the pitch angle you need for your specific application.

Hello Tiger Thank you for the input. Heres what happened. The worm was a given (has a fast spiral). The first attempt, the worm gear was helical cut with involute tooth form. Would not back drive. Broke teeth trying. Second attempt, the worm gear was helical cut with square tooth form. It works well. Tiger thanks again. Stewart |
