Greetings to all members! I'm a designer by trade and I'm working on a project that involves sheet metal. I'm planning to put a hinge on 2 non ferrous gauge 3 sheet metal approx. 13"x4" each. Would it be more economical to use an existing piano hinge or is there a way to create a hinge on the sheet metal? Any books I can look into regarding this? I appreciate your help. |

You can have the hinges punched dirrectly onto the edges, easily. The price per parts will depend on the quantity. Shop the project around to shops with turret punches, don't take your first and only quote, and let them know you are shopping around. If the metal pannel is simply a retangle, the hinge half can be punched onto an edge in seconds. The set-up cost will have to be pro-rated into the quantity. Most shops will have a minimum shop rate and the set-up will be very quick.
Turret punches, (machines that punch out shapes of sheet metal in the flat with all kinds of holes, dimples, stiffeners, and such) can punch hinge shapes onto the edges of the projects. These are simply a tool choice to be made and installed onto the turrets. Such machines are CNC controlled and can do amazing things. If the shop does not have a hinge punch set to suit your needs you may be ask to purchase it. If you are required to pay for the tool, ask to hold it between runs of product, else often it will be used for other projects and accumulate ware from other projects not yours. Contact me if you need more information, I know a company that produces these tools and may have the configuration you require, off the shelf, or custom in days, to fit all the various turret punch brands and configurations. These tools are not as expensive as you may think. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. Lets see, riveting, welding, bolts, and you could actualy have a hinge formed int othe sheet metal. All you need is generous radii at the form edges and transitions. Do you have cad software with sheet metal modeling package? Like Solid Works, Solid Edge, or Proe? |
