I'm currently going to school for residential design/drafting and my sister and brother-in-law have enlisted my "skills" for a home they intend to build this spring. It is a one-story home with a full basement. They would like to use steel i-beams and posts in the basement for bearing support. The problem: the charts given to me in school aren't sufficient for the span of the house. The longest dimension north/south is 48'-0" and the longest dimension east/west is 49'-6". Is there an alternate chart I can use? Where do I find one? I've searched the web to no avail. PLEASE HELP!!?!? |

You aren't thinking to go clear span are you? Doesn't your chart work for the span between the posts you plan to space about the floor plan? ..and doesn't it suggest proper ways to connect the post to the beams and the floor, and basement structural walls? ....I'm betting it does.. good luck.. make them proud of you. No, I don't plan a clear span, but what I understood is that you have to take into consideration the entire span of the building/floor framing to get the proper size beam? Or am I losing my mind? |

Let's wait for an answer from a structural engineer... in which I am not. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Your beam span charts should be used for the span lengths between the posts and walls or from post to post, not for the entire length. The charts are only for the length that is unsupported. Please have a structural engineer approve your drawings before a contractor is hired. There are load path and detail issues that must be tended to that can't properly be addressed here. Good luck! |
