I was thinking I'd like to study mechanical engineering, but with a little bit of online research it seems that the work is generally limited to industrial tools, power plants and airplanes. I think I would rather design products that people buy. Is mechanical engineering appropriate for that? If not, what kind of degree is? "By the time you read this you've already read it." .. now working as a machine design engineer for one of the best companies for employees in America which also happens to be a highly profitable fortune 500 company, I wouldn't trade for the world. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |

Mechanical engineers work on everything under the sun. In some way, a mechanical engineer has affected everything in the room you are in (I can say that and I'm not even there!). The real challenge with a mechanical engineering career, is that there is no way you can predict which part of industry or products you will work on. When you graduate, or are near it, you will likely take the first exciting job offer you get. |

Mechanical engineering is great. Learn all the CAD software you can and you will be great in Design. Mechanical engineering will get you a great variety of jobs similar to the one you described. Sammy |

Do you guys think a distance learning degree in mechanical engineering is reasonable?

I don't think distance learning for an ME degree is a good idea...you need the hands on and face to face interaction. Although some of your minor classes may require online learning. Distance learning is great for minor classes...I've obtained some certificates that way...but I wouldn't try the tough courses thru distance learning. |
