Simply put what does a key do on a shaft what is its purpose? What does a spline do and what its purpose thanks. What does a reversable load mean DONT GIVE UP THE FAITH |

A key is a feature that assembles with a keyway (or slot) on a cylindrical feature (shaft) to prevent rotation. A spline is a series of grooves cut along the length of a shaft (usually for a short length of the shaft). The spline assembles with "internal" splines on a mating hole, and the spline allows torque power to be transferred between the two components.
So a spline is similar in function to a key, but for a different reason: the spline is stronger and transfers torque (I guess the key can transfer torque too, but a significant load might break it.) |

.... and a key difference is that a spline is more often used when the male and female protions slide back and forth.. for example on the telescoping portions of a drive shaft. The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. |
