You have ask a question that requires many other questions to be answered. What kind of mechanical? crank case, leverage, brake press, punch press ...??
Some large mechanical presses have quite small motors, it is all done with gear reduction, crank size, and flywheel mass.
The worst suggestion of your lifetime may be the catalyst to the grandest idea of the century, never let suggestions go unsaid nor fail to listen to them. Modified by randykimball at Wed, Mar 28, 2007, 00:05:49 |

I always assumed that the tonnage rating had to do with the strength of the mechanical structure (crankshaft, bearings, journals, sidewalls, etc.) rather than anything to do with the rotary input power. If that were the case, then you could raise the "rating" of a press just by putting a bigger motor on it, and I don't think you can do that. In other words, while the motor size is related to the tonnage of the press, I don't think it DETERMINES the tonnage of the press. |
