I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this question however, let me give it a shot.  We are investigating the use of a magnetic sensor in conjuction with a paddle wheel to measure fluid flow (gas or liquid).  I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with such a design specifically with respect to the type of sensors better suited for this application.  What are the advantages of one type of sensor over another for this?  Thanks in advance.

Hi,
A couple of ideas and a neat cheat. One, there are several types of and sizes of proximity switches which can be found on the web of your local perfered electronic wholesale house. These may work in your application. Second, you may try an electric eye of some sort, there are infar red, emitter-reciever, and others.

Now the cheat.... at any good bicycle specialty store you can purchase one of several brands of speed-o-meters that use a magnet placed on a spoke. These gaggets count the times the magnet passes a sensor and a computor chip calculates the speed, milage, average speed... and so on. Well, here is the magic, most of them allow you to choose the size of the wheel (put in a number to be used to calc the distance). This means you can put in a number that you could use to calculate (you would need to come up with a calibrated foumula by measuring actual volume) a meaningful data for your use. A powerful kool trick to use and they are quite cheap and reliable! Now after you have done the work of figuring our what number to give the speed-o-meter for figuring and done the actual volume test to learn the formula for you to use to make the speed-o-meter results actual volume, you can use the different output screens of the speed-o-meter to tell you not only the volume per hour but the accumulated volume, average volume, fastest volume, length of time not pumping, and no telling what else.

let us know how it goes!
