Let me take a crack at what I think you are asking.

In machine design it is important to either over build to a margin (expensive and heavy)... or to do stress analysis of compontents to be sure they will handle the loads and strains of the work envelope. For example: this allows us to prevent shafts from breaking under torque twisting or bending loads before the normal expected lifetime of the machine has expired. Also, it provides data for preventive maintenance replacement of perishable parts. .... It tells how large to design a shaft or bulkhead to handle the required loads without using more weight in the machine than is required in places where weight is critical. ... also tels us where and how much weight we can remove to lighten and still maintain strength. .... it saves money in material, maintenance, downtime, shipping, and the list goes on.

There is no better example than in the modern automobile. ..cost, weight, strength, crush panels, stiffness in the right directions but yet easy to absorb impact in certain other directions.
... this is all done with stress analysis.

Is that what you were asking?
