Pipe Support Spacing For Deflection Control Design Calculator
The purpose of pipe supports is to control the weight effects of the piping system, as well as loads caused by pressure thrust, vibration, wind, earthquake, shock, and thermal displacement. The weight effects to be considered for support design shall be the greater of operating, (including thermal expansion loads) or hydrotest loads.

Pipe support spacing is an important consideration in the design of piping systems. The permissible mid-span deflection concept, "y", is one technique commonly employed for support spacing. This technique is based on a specified mid-span "y" deflection of the supported pipe considering the pipe, contents, and insulation weights. The equation for determining the distance (L) between pipe supports is:
Eq. 1
L = [ ( y · E · I ) / ( 17.1 · W ) ]¼
Eq. 2
I = π / 64 · ( Do4 - Di4 )
Eq. 3
W = Wp + Wf + Wa
Where:
L = pipe support spacing, feet
y = permissible mid-span deflection, in
E = modulus of elasticity at design temperature
I = moment of inertia of pipe
W = weight of supported pipe, including pipe, contents, insulation, lb/ft.
Wp = weight of pipe, lb/ft.
Wf = weight of fluid within pipe, lb/ft.
Wa = weight of additional materials associated with pipe installtion, lb/ft.
Do = pipe outside diameter, in
Di = pipe inside diameter, in
17.1 = converstion + FOS
