Shear Webs with Beads Critical Shear Stress Equation and Calculator

Beaded panels are one type of non-bucking shear webs. Stiffeners must be added at load points to prevent premature collapse under loading. Since the collapsing stress is only slightly higher than the buckling stress, the buckling stress should be considered the ultimate allowable .

The critical shear stress τcr for a beaded web can be expressed as:

Eq. 1

τ c r = K s K l E ( t h ) 2 ( π 2 12 ( 1 μ 2 ) )

Eq. 2
Shear Buckling Constant, Figure 2
F2= H3 ( h / d )

Eq. 3
Panel Aspect Ratio, Figure 3
F3 = a / h

Where:

E = Modulus of elasticity lbs/in2
t = thickness, in
h = plate width, in
a = plate length, in
H = bead height, in
d = bead spacing, in
µ = poisson's ratio
Ks = Simply supported flat sheet - curve "2", shear buckling constant based on a/b from figure 2
Kl = Beaded-web shear buckling coefficient obtained from figure 3
