Hollow vs Solid Shafting Relative Strength and Weight Calculator
Stress Deflection Calculators & Formulas
Comparison of Hollow and Solid Shafting with Same Outside Diameter.
This table calculator provides a relative strength and weight of a solid shaft of the same outside diameter. The upper figures in in the results give the percent decrease in strength and the lower figures give the percent decrease in weight.
Example:
A 4-inch shaft, with a 2-inch hole through it, has a weight 25 percent less than a solid 4-inch shaft, but its strength is decreased only 6.25 percent.
